Sometimes expressions in Ireland are the same as they are in America, sometimes they are completely different. And then there are times when they sound the same, but are actually different. One example of that is the phrase “table the discussion”. In America, this phrase is used when an item of business is being put off until a later time. In Ireland, the very same phrase is used when an item of business is ready to be discussed. In America, the “table” seems to be a storage area. In Ireland, the “table” is where people are talking – with a nice cup of tea, of course.
