As it stands today, Ireland allows abortion only as a side-effect of trying to treat for the life of the mother. In other words, Doctors can never intentionally harm the baby, but if in the course of treating the mother the baby is harmed, they will not be prosecuted. However, there is currently a push to legislate for direct abortion in Ireland in certain circumstances. For a brief explanation of how this would change Irish law, this article may be helpful. You can also click here to see a letter to the editor on the issue in the Irish Times signed by a number of evangelical church leaders from around Ireland (including our church in Youghal). Just so you know, the first page is another letter – the letter I am talking about starts at the bottom and continues on page two.
