Early this morning the Irish parliament passed a bill that allows abortions to be preformed in Ireland for the first time. At this point, abortion is limited to cases where the life of the mother is in danger, but that includes a clause about mothers who self-identify as suicidal. Never before has a doctor in Ireland been allowed to intentionally kill a child, but from today on, a mother’s womb will be the most dangerous place some babies can be. We are thankful for several representatives who went against their political party to vote against the bill, even when it cost them their positions and future within the party. The government passed this legislation in the face of huge grassroots protests, and in contradiction to promises they made while campaigning, so we are hopeful that the people of Ireland will not abandon the unborn as easily as the government has.
